Pittsburgh has benefited from some luck. The Marlins have lost six straight, including sweeps by the Guardians and the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cardinals also stumbled, losing two of three to the Arizona Diamondbacks, including an 8-7 collapse after leading 7-0 through five innings.
Arizona is now just half a game back, creating a four-way race for the last Wild Card spot. The Washington Nationals are two games back, and the San Diego Padres are further behind after losing a series to the Kansas City Royals.
The Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies have pulled ahead in the standings, with the Cubs 4.5 games clear and the Phillies three games ahead of the pack.
Pirates Face Crucial Stretch in July
Pittsburgh has faced five postseason contenders in July, and the schedule doesn't get easier. They travel to face the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium from July 20-22, then host the Cubs (July 24-26) and the Diamondbacks (July 27-29) at PNC Park.
These series are critical. The Pirates have shown they can compete with the best, but they need to keep winning to make their first postseason since 2015. The team's discipline and resilience are being tested, and so far, they are passing the test.
