Grain Returns to Port of Churchill After Five-Year Hiatus
The Port of Churchill is set to resume grain shipments this summer, ending a five-year drought for the Hudson Bay facility. Chris Avery, CEO of Arctic Gateway Group, confirmed at least two grain shipments will depart, with the first expected in late August or early September.
“Given the history of grain at the Port of Churchill, this is a significant event in the sense of grain coming back to Churchill, going to global markets,” Avery said at Arctic Gateway's Winnipeg office.
Grain shipments through Churchill date back to 1931 but were suspended between 2016 and 2018 due to railway disrepair. They resumed briefly in 2019 after Arctic Gateway acquired the port and railway, only to halt again in 2021 during the
