Former soap star Kelvin Fletcher has opened up about a serious parasite problem on his Cheshire farm, revealing that worms proved fatal for several lambs, including his family's treasured pet, Aga. The revelation came during a recent episode of the ITV series Fletcher's Family Farm, where the actor and his wife Liz took urgent steps to protect their remaining flock.
What happened to Kelvin Fletcher's lambs on the farm?
The Fletchers invited vet Angelica to conduct a health examination of their sheep following the heartbreaking loss of Aga, an orphan lamb the family had grown deeply attached to. Kelvin explained the urgency of the situation:
To try to prevent losing any lambs, vet Angelica will take the poo samples collected today for testing so we can treat any early signs of infection.
The vet noted that while adult sheep gradually build immunity to parasites, young lambs remain highly vulnerable. Worms are present throughout pastureland, making early exposure and monitoring essential for survival.
How did the Fletcher family respond to the worm infection?
Kelvin admitted the winter months had been brutal for their livestock.
We're taking a belt and braces approach this year, as through the winter, worms were a real problem and proved to be fatal for a couple of our lambs, including our beloved Aga. Aga was an orphan lamb, whom we fell in love with, but later lost to a worm infection.
Fortunately, the test results came back clear. Angelica confirmed the worm count was not at dangerous levels, though the family still proceeded with precautionary treatment as advised.
What other losses has the Fletcher family endured?
This is not the first tragedy to strike the farm. In a previous episode, Kelvin and Liz lost their beloved cow Cherry under sudden and mysterious circumstances. Kelvin described the moment he discovered her:
As the sun fades on our evening rounds, Josh and I are confronted by a sign no farmer ever wants to see. Our much-loved cow Cherry is lying motionless on her side.
The actor was visibly shaken, saying:
It's absolutely heartbreaking. I've no idea at all about what's caused it. I'm just surprised how shocking it is, to be honest, I'm just having a bit of shock.
Vet Hugo was called to conduct a post-mortem to determine the cause of death. Cherry, who was believed to be pregnant again, left behind a calf named Ezra. Kelvin reflected on the loss:
This is a lot to process. We are such a small herd, and Cherry was most definitely the matriarch. Losing her is a huge blow for us and her calf, Ezra. It's really upsetting. Absolutely gutted.
Why is this story relevant beyond celebrity news?
Beyond the celebrity appeal, the Fletchers' experience highlights a genuine challenge facing small-scale farmers everywhere: parasite management in livestock. For Guyana's growing agricultural sector, the lessons are clear. Proactive veterinary care, regular testing, and early intervention are not optional extras, they are the difference between a thriving herd and devastating losses.
The Fletchers' willingness to share their failures alongside their successes offers a refreshing dose of transparency. In an era where farming is often romanticised on television, seeing the real costs, both emotional and financial, of livestock care is valuable. It also underscores the importance of allowing farmers to operate without excessive regulatory burdens that can slow down necessary treatments and veterinary responses.
What can farmers learn from the Fletcher farm's experience?
For farmers in Guyana and the Caribbean, the key takeaways are straightforward. Regular faecal testing for internal parasites should be standard practice, especially during wet seasons when worm burdens spike. Young animals require particular attention, as their immune systems are still developing. And when losses occur, post-mortem examinations are essential to prevent further casualties.
The Fletchers' story is ultimately one of resilience. Despite the setbacks, they continue to adapt, learn, and push forward. That spirit of perseverance, combined with sound veterinary advice, is what keeps farms running, whether in Cheshire or the Caribbean.
