In a welcome move for anime enthusiasts, Netflix has finally corrected a persistent subtitle issue that plagued its rollout of the classic comedy series Gintama. The streaming giant, which began introducing the series to North American subscribers in January 2026, had left many fans frustrated by missing English subtitles on key episodes. As of July 2026, the problem is largely resolved, though some quirks remain.
What Was the Gintama Subtitle Problem?
When Netflix first added Gintama Season 1 Part 1 to its catalog in January 2026, subscribers noticed a glaring omission: the Japanese audio track had no English subtitles. While the English dub was available, fans who prefer the original language were left in the dark. The issue was not corrected until April 2026, a delay that drew criticism from the anime community.
The same error resurfaced in May 2026 with the release of Gintama Season 2 Part 2 (Episodes 27-50). Once again, half of the season was watchable with English subtitles, while the other half was not. Netflix has since fixed this, adding subtitles for all 50 episodes of Season 2.
How Did Netflix Gradually Roll Out Gintama?
Gintama, a long-running anime with over 360 episodes, has been released on Netflix in stages. After the initial Season 1 premiere in January 2026, the first 26 episodes of Season 2 were added in March 2026 for viewers in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada.
