Guyana Police Force conducts marijuana eradication exercise in Upper Berbice River region

The Guyana Police Force has conducted a successful four-day marijuana eradication operation in the Upper Berbice River region, resulting in significant seizures of drugs, weapons, and maritime equipment.

Operation Details and Findings

Using advanced drone technology, law enforcement officials identified and targeted a six-acre farm prepared for marijuana cultivation. The operation, which took place across three distinct areas, led to the discovery of:

  • 4 nursery beds containing approximately 5,000 cannabis seedlings
  • 64 pounds of dried cannabis, with 30 pounds found in an abandoned church
  • Three acres of mature marijuana plants reaching heights of six feet

Maritime and Weapons Seizures

In a development that highlights ongoing concerns about maritime security in Guyana's waterways, authorities seized significant equipment including:

  • One wooden boat
  • Two outboard engines (15 HP and 50 HP)
  • One 12-gauge double-barrel shotgun
  • One .32 pistol with an empty magazine
  • Three 20-gauge shotgun cartridges

Economic Impact

Law enforcement officials estimate the street value of the seized marijuana at over five million Guyana dollars (approximately US$20,000). This operation represents a significant blow to illegal drug operations in the region, which have been impacting Guyana's economic development efforts.

Additional items seized include two cellular phones, a chainsaw, and various other materials which were subsequently destroyed by fire. No arrests have been made in connection with the operation, and investigations are ongoing.
